Esperanto: History

Esperanto is an artificial language created by L. L. Zamenhof with the hope that it would become an international common or universal language.

First Publication

Esperanto was first published as Lingvo Internacia1, but this it was later changed to Esperanto based on L. L. Zamenhof's pen name — Doctor Esperanto.

Adoption of Use

In 1987, the centennial year of Esperanto, the United Nations gave an estimate that 8 million people from 130 different countries spoke Esperanto.

Original Intent of Esperanto

Esperanto was also designed to be easy to learn and use. The creator of Esperanto attempted this by :

  • Giving the direct object a -n suffix.
  • Making nouns, verbs, adjective, and adverbs have the same ending so their use can be easily understood.
  • Making all verbs regular by using only one conjugation model with three conjugations — past, present, and future.
