Intonation is the emotional tone in which something is said. In English, intonation is sometimes referred to as a person's tone of voice.

The intonation of a phrase is thought to carry MORE meaning than the actual meaning of the words spoken.

It is not the same as the tone of a word, as in the tone system of Chinese.
