Parts of Speech

The parts of speech are the basic types of words. Each has their own role in a sentence. Besides the essential noun and verb, the other parts of speech fit into two classes : those that modify the meaning of a noun or adjective or link words together.

Essential Parts of Speech

It's assumed that nouns and verbs were developed first. This assumption is made using common sense — if you don't have nouns, you don't know what the hell you are talking about and if you don't have verbs you don't know what the hell you're doing. Nouns and verbs are also the only parts of speech used by the cliche movie caveman.

Nouns

Nouns are like fingers. Like fingers, they can be considered obscene by some people, however in this case we mean that they are used to point. In other words, nouns are used describe what the hell you are talking about.

Pronouns

Pronouns are words that can be used instead of a more specific noun.

Verbs

Verbs are action words. They show what action is being taken.
