Phonetics is the study of speech sounds.

Branches of Phonetics

There are three major branches of phonetics. Each of them deals with a specific area: how speech sounds are created, the sounds themselves (as sound waves), and how they are understood.

Articulatory Phonetics

Articulatory Phonetics is the study of how speech sounds are created by the speech organs that create them.

Acoustic Phonetics

Acoustic Phonetics studies speech sounds as sound waves. Work in acoustic phonetics has brought about such advances as speech recognition software.
