Prefix

A prefixes are tacked onto the front of words to modify their meaning.

In English, you can apply a prefix to any word. However, it's usage tends to be limited to whether or not using the prefix with the word makes sense or not.

Take for example these three English prefixes :

  • pre-
  • re-
  • un-

Assuming a firearm in the meaning of the word shoot then :

  • If you preshoot something then you have just shot it.
  • If you reshoot something then it's not dead yet. Therefore you may have to reload.
  • Once shot, it's fairly impossible to unshoot something. Missing the target does not count as unshooting. :)

In Polish, dis- becomes dyz- or dys-.
